Microsoft ‘Kumo’ coming next week

Source: arstechnica.com

A new rumor suggests that Microsoft will be launching Kumo, a major upgrade to Live Search, next week.

According to a new well-founded rumor, Microsoft will be debuting Kumo, an upgrade to Live Search that the software giant’s own employees have been testing internally for at least two months, at D: All Things Digital. Unsurprisingly, the rumor comes straight from the horse’s mouth. I guess they just couldn’t keep it to themselves any longer: “Sources say the company is expected to demonstrate it at our D: All Things Digital conference next week.”

Microsoft’s Web search business hasn’t been doing well for the last few years. It seems that every gain that the company manages to make in marketshare, it ends up losing back to Google a few months down the road. The company makes frequent updates to its search engine, some minor, and some major, but Kumo is expected to be the biggest improvement yet. Whether that will be good enough to break the cycle remains be seen.

Some lucky users got to test the new Kumo layout on live.com in March and others got Kumo features on live.com earlier this month. It would not surprise me in the slightest if this rumor ended up being true, but from what the general public has seen so far, mostly through tips and leaks, Microsoft isn’t impressing. I will have to reserve judgment till the company really starts to show something.
